It's one of the questions we hear most, usually from owners who already put real work into their Instagram. Here's the short answer: Instagram is great at getting you noticed. A website is where people who already want you decide to book or buy. Most local businesses do best with both, and the website can be small.
What Instagram does well
- Showing your work. For salons, food, design, events and anything visual, nothing beats a grid of real photos and videos.
- Reaching people who don't know you yet. Reels, shares and tags put you in front of new eyes.
- Keeping in touch. Followers see your new work, your offers and your personality.
- Messages. Plenty of customers are happy to DM.
If you're just starting out, or almost all your customers come from referrals, Instagram alone can carry you for a while.
Where Instagram falls short
- You don't own it. The algorithm decides who sees your posts. Accounts get hacked, locked or restricted, sometimes without a clear way back.
- Key details are hard to find. Prices, services, hours and how to book end up buried in highlights, captions and DMs. Every "how much?" message is a customer who almost left.
- Not everyone uses it. Some customers don't have Instagram, and people who aren't logged in get asked to sign in after browsing a little.
- Google searches don't land there. When someone searches "lash extensions near me" or "catering for 50 people Queens", Google shows its map, profiles and websites. Instagram posts rarely appear for those searches.
What a website does that Instagram can't
- It shows up on Google, and it's the link your Google profile sends people to.
- It answers the questions before they're asked: services, prices, hours, location, how to book.
- It can take bookings, orders or inquiries while you're busy working.
- It works for everyone, with no app or login.
- It's yours. No algorithm decides whether people can see it.

When you can wait, and when you shouldn't
You can probably wait if your calendar is full from referrals and you're not trying to grow yet.
A website is worth it when:
- people search Google for what you do in your area,
- you take bookings, deposits or orders,
- you want to look established to new or bigger clients,
- you plan to run ads (ads need somewhere good to send people),
- you're answering the same questions in DMs every day.
The simple version that works
You don't need a big site. A clean one-page site with your services, prices, hours, location, a few great photos and one clear way to book or contact you covers most of it. Link it from your Google profile and your Instagram bio, and let each one do its job: Instagram gets people interested, the website gets them to act.
